Rinn’s Efforts Help Men’s Hoops Upset #25 Cornerstone at Home

Southfield, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological University men’s basketball team hosted #25 Cornerstone University at home on Wednesday night, November 17th. The Blue Devils controlled the tempo right from the tip and made plays down the stretch to upset the Golden Eagles by a final score of 71-62. 

Andrew Rinn came off the bench to lead all scorers with a career-high 19 points shooting 8-of-12 from the field and adding five rebounds, Brandon Beavers and Gunnar Gustafson both combined for 22 points and 15 rebounds. 

In the first five minutes of the game, both teams were trading baskets. A Rinn three-pointer tied the game at nine apiece.

A 5-0 from the Golden Eagles came right after Rinn’s three, but LTU answered back with a 7-0 of their own from a Rinn layup, Sanna Sisawo three-pointer, and Gustafson layup.

The score at this point was 16-15 LTU had the lead with 12:32 left.

The lead was extended to five after Blake Lund got past his defender for a nice finish at the rim to make it 25-20 with 6:38 to play.

Back-to-back field goals from Carter Nyp & Jack Joldersma made it 25-24.

With 2:54 to go in the first half, Beavers was able to find a gap and make a contested layup to tie the game up at 30.

Nyp came back down on the other end to nail a three.

In the next possession, Rinn was able to knock down a 15-foot jumper over his defender.

That was all for the first half as LTU entered the locker room down 35-32.

LTU shot the ball 15-of-40 (37.5%) from the field and 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three in the first half.

The first basket for LTU came from a wing three-pointer from Alek Ivanovic.

A Christian Rodriguez made basket tied the game back to 40 with 16:52 to go.

In the next three minutes of play, LTU went on an 11-0 that started from a Beavers made layup.

Rinn hit back-to-back jump shots.

Isaiah Cumberland and Gustafson both got fouled during their run and trickled in three made free throws.

The Blue Devils lead was up to 55-44 with just under 12 minutes to play.

A Trent Summerfield basket, Rodriguez three-pointer, and Nyp three cut the lead to three. 55-52.

LTU was forced to call a timeout.

Coach Pickens called Rinn’s number late in the game and he came up huge down the stretch hitting a big-time jumper to put his team up six with under six minutes left in the game.

Rodriguez came back down a couple of possessions later and got to the rim to finish over an LTU defender to make it 66-61.

Rinn’s number was called again with under a minute to go, and he was able to knock down another jump shot to add to his 19 off the bench.

LTU got a stop on the other end, Rinn came back down on the other end, drove in the lane to collapse the defense, and kicked it out to Cumberland, who then passed it to Lund wide open in the corner and nailed a huge three-pointer to give them the win at home.

The final in this one was 71-62.

LTU shot the ball 28-of-60 (46.7%), 8-of-22 (36.4%) from three, and 7-14 (50.0%) from the line.

The Blue Devils’ (5-3) next match is on the road when they play the University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, November 20th. This game will tip-off at 3 PM.
